Homemade Churros

Homemade churros are a “typical fair” dessert that you can now make yourself thanks to this simple recipe based on four ingredients. They are a sweet designed for a cold afternoon snack accompanied by a good cup of hot chocolate.

Churros or syringes are a dessert of Iberian cuisine. They are born in Spain but are popular in almost all of Europe and Latin America, where they are sold in churrerías, popular markets or street stalls.

Flour, sugar, oil and water that is the only thing you will need to have at home to make these sweet fries that can also be filled with chocolate, dulce de leche or jams. Keep reading!

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups of non-rising wheat flour (300 g)
  • 4 tablespoons of refined sugar (60 g)
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon (20 g)
  • 3 ½ glasses of water (350 ml)
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 cups of sunflower oil (500 ml)

  • The first thing you should do is arrange all the ingredients on the work table, in order to save time and preserve order in the kitchen. It is a marvel when the ingredients are prepared by portions and cuts, you will see that everything is easier.
  • The utensils you will need to make homemade churros are: a small pot, a deep frying pot, a pastry bag, nozzles and a bowl.
  • In the small pot add the water and bring to a boil.
  • Meanwhile, sift the flour without rising.
  • Add the non-leavening flour in a bowl along with the dry ingredients: refined sugar, salt and ground cinnamon.
  • Once the water is boiling, add it to the flour and with a wooden spoon, begin to create a homogeneous and chewy dough.
  • Then let the dough rest.
  • After a few minutes, knead the mixture a little more.
  • In the deep frying pot, place the ½ liter of oil and bring to moderate heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, take the pastry bag and fill with a little of the homemade churros dough.
  • Start making small sticks with the pastry bag and cook until golden brown.
  • Then, remove from heat and drain on absorbent paper.
  • Still fresh from the fire, sprinkle the churros with plenty of sugar.
  • Serve the churros accompanied by a rich cup of hot chocolate. You can also add chocolate syrup, a rich hazelnut cream or dulce de leche on top of the churros.

This is a hypercaloric dessert . It has abundant sugar and oil, so its moderate consumption is recommended.

So that the churro absorbs oil as little as possible it is important to fry them in an oil that is hot enough, but prevents it from being too hot. The idea is that the churro can also be cooked inside.

It is important that you respect the rule of including hot water to the mixture, this process helps to pre-cook the churros. Avoid burning your hands by using a wooden spoon or paddle. You can also mix the sugar with the cinnamon powder and sprinkle this mixture over the churros.

If you want to make stuffed churros, we recommend preparing a pastry bag with a very fine nozzle. Add the filling of preference and once fried, fill the churro at each end. These always have small holes at the ends where you can fill them easily.
